In 1984, I found on a bulletin board at the Music Department of the
University of Puerto Rico, a
brochure announcing a worldwide guitar conference in the Caribbean island of
Martinique. I read on page 3 and
page 4 that Jaco would be teaching bass guitar. I made the necessary
arrangements to participate in this unique event.
On the last paragraph, page 150 of
The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius, Bill Milkowski
mentioned a trip to Guadeloupe that Jaco and Rashied Ali did "to conduct
clinics and play a series of concerts. Their performance on December 19 was
broadcast over French radio."
I find these statements inaccurate since I know first hand that the events took
place in Martinique from December 10 until December 14 (day
5, Jaco's concert). The following pages describe the highlights for each day
and include recordings. Read
about another participant account of the workshop. |
